Office Manager

According to Scott Kaplan, Kay Klaiber is the most important person in the BK&L office.  A mainstay of the front office for almost 20 years, Kay keeps everything running smoothly.  As the firm has expanded, so have Kay’s responsibilities.  In addition to her office management role, Kay handles everything from bank reconciliations to billing.  Of course, from January through April, the accountants keep her busy with a myriad of tasks related to tax-returns.

Kay says the best thing about her job is working with people.  She prides herself on her ability to recognize voices and remember details about client interactions that allow her to deliver personalized service every time.  Kay’s brand of personalized service has even extended to helping a client find a good barber!  She jokes that even after 20 years with the firm, a client will occasionally say, "maybe even you can help me" if someone isn't immediately available...because of course, she often can.  And although she does know almost everything about the firm, her powers of clairvoyance do not extend to knowing exactly how long someone will be on the phone.

An avid sports enthusiast, Kay is a fan of both the Cubs and the Bears.  Speedskating, however, is undeniably her favorite.  Two sons, Greg and Jeff, skated in Evanston and then Jeff went with the US Olympic Team to Calgary in 1988 and to Albertville in 1992.

When she’s not in the office or following one of her favorite teams, Kay’s likely to be working in the garden.  The BK&L staff are the beneficiaries of Kay’s green thumb for most of the summer as her garden overflows with fresh vegetables.  Kay is also a reliable source of the latest in mystery, spy and political novels and usually has a book or two or six on hand to recommend and lend.
